Garrett is originally from Wisconsin, but went to high school in Minnesota and has been going to school in California at Stanford University for the last 6 years. While he recently completed his B.S. degree in Management Science and Engineering, he is currently still finishing his M.S. degree in the same field. Heath presently lives in Palo Alto and began a career as a volunteer assistant coach for the Stanford track and cross-country teams this fall. He also continues to be involved with the academic community through a position as a teaching assistant and student mentor at Stanford University.

Garrett recently finished his running career at Stanford University where he was an 8-time All American, national champion in the indoor DMR, and competed at the 2008 Olympic Trials in the 1500m. He finished his senior season with a 2nd place finish at the outdoor NCAA meet, recording the 3rd sub 3:40 1500m time of his career. Heath first broke the four-minute mile barrier in February of 2007 (3:59.60). In the 5000m race on the track, Heath also recorded the fastest time of his career at the Stanford Invitational (13:42) in his senior year.
