UC Berkeley alum Chris Chavez qualified for the Olympic Trials Marathon when he ran 1:04:35 for the half marathon in 2010. Last year he also ran 28:59 on track for 10k and went into the 2010 Chicago Marathon with high hopes. Crossing the finish line in a disappointing 2:22:09 gave Chris a good lesson on the distance as well as hungry for a better performance.
Chris graduated from Cal in 2008 where he ran four years of track and cross country. He was a member of their 2007 XC team that placed 16th at the NCAA championships. Chris' personal best in the 5k came his senior year when he ran 14:14. Since leaving Cal Chris has focused on longer distance races running 1:05:13 at the 2009 San Jose Half Marathon and 1:04:35 to place 15th at the 2010 Half Marathon National Championships in Houston.
