While in high school, Michael was the runner-up at the Footlocker National Championships and state cross country champion. In track, he was the Nike Indoor National Champion in the two mile and Nike Outdoor National Champion in the mile.
At Cal, Coe set a school record in the mile, running 3:56.18. He also won All-American honors at the 2009 Indoor Track and Field Championships by placing 2nd in the 3,000m and anchoring the Cal DMR to a 3rd place finish. Outdoors he placed 10th in the NCAA 1,500m.
