Jake is originally from Kentfield, Ca and attended Redwood High School. At University of Washington he received degrees in Economics and Psychology. His sister Meagan plays on the Cal volleyball team and his other sister, Caitlin, is about to run on the Track and Cross Country teams for UCLA.

After moving up to Seattle to run for University of Washington he competed at 5 NCAA Championship meets in Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track. He became an All-American at 5000m and the MPSF Conference Champion also at 5000m. While competing at Cal he made the Junior World Track and Field team at 10,000 in Beijing, China.
