By Jake Schmitt This past holiday week proved to be a great opportunity for a few BATC athletes to shake off some cobwebs and test their fitness. The racing week began with Magdalena Boulet taking on the Big Sur Half Marathon as a marathon pace workout. The gun went off in less than ideal conditions and Magda quickly found herself letting race leader Blake Russell go as she wanted to stay within her marathon zone. However, as the miles clicked by and she hit the turn around she found herself loosening up and feeling good. By mile ten she close...
Alysia Montano finished a strong 4th place in the 800m final at the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, on Sunday. Her 1:57.48 performance was a seasonal best. She finished 2 seconds behind winner, Mariya Savinova, of Russia, who ran 1:55.87. The tone of the race was set early thanks to a blistering half way split of 55 seconds. Janeth Jepkosgei of Kenya, led the charge, with Montano just behind in 3rd position. The pack regrouped on the final backstretch, but Montano found herself boxed in the middle of the pack...
Jake Schmitt and Clara Peterson both stamped their tickets to the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials with their fast performances at the Giant Race Half Marathon this weekend. Schmitt surged away early to win in a time of 1:04:51, while Peterson followed the perfect pace setting of Bay Area Track Club teammate Magdalena Lewy-Boulet to finish second, in 1:14:31. Shannon Rowbury advanced to the semi-finals of the women’s 1500m at the World Track and Field Championships in Daegu, Korea, on Sunday. Rowbury finished sixth in the tactical opening round heat, in a time of 4:14.43. The pack started very slowly, covering the first 800 meters in 2:22. The pace stayed pedestrian until the final lap. When the sprint unfolded, Rowbury was stuck in 7th position, just outside the last automatic qualifying spot. On the final straightaway several runners got tangled up, causing Ethiopia’s Geze...
