Considering Racing or Spectating Track & Field in Europe?

Hello, I am hoping to find some races in august of 2012 to race in europe. Where do I find the meet informations?

i think he means vegans or vegs with loose restrictions on fish; more specifically called pescitarians but the term isn't as commonly used as vegetarian.

Swim Suits, and Alter-Gs, and Elliptigos... Oh my!

Swim Suits, and Alter-Gs, and Elliptigos... Oh my!

Yes when we realize a race is just a race and that our family, friends (and in my case God) are more important than anything we can do in running, injuries are just part of the experience and shouldn't control our outlook on life or our happiness. Glad to hear you are doing well and enjoying what really is most important.

The High Life: Eating to Run

The High Life: Eating to Run

Can you be more specific? " fresh and simply required adding bits of this or that. She combined things that I would never have thought to put together. It all worked and tasted great" is not very informative. Examples??

So...what _were_ all of you eating (not meatball subs, I know!). Any good lists/recommendations for vegetarians and similar?

Intention and Commitment

Intention and Commitment

Hi, Magda... best wishes for a successful Dash to the Finish in New York this weekend. Could you please describe as best as possible some of the routes you used on training runs around the Lake Tahoe area recently? I would like to get up there for a few workouts as well but I'm not sure where the best starting points / trail heads are. Thanks in advance for the reply.

No Dope, No Hope

This is a beautiful piece, if only everyone involved in sports thinks the way you do, to imagine that these sports cheats are employed to coach our children, one begins to wonder what legacy them possess, like the saying goes you can give what you don't have.

The Year in Review

The Year in Review

Thank you Rob. Your comment is really touching and I am very grateful for your support! It means a lot to know that I have people who are rooting for me and who will support me regardless of the ups and downs. That's what I love about the track community!

The Year in Review

The Year in Review

I needed that blog. You see Shannon, even non-pro athletes can relate to your year. It was very real and honest. As a fan of yours(and the rest of team Cook/ Bay Area track Club)- I new something was up, but you you kept it to yourself and your immediate support group. When you made the U.S. team this year, your reaction was more emotional than when you made your first team or even the bronze medal. It was touching and just plain brilliant-exactly why I love the purity of track. It let your fans know who you were without even knowing what the details of your struggle. It was a thing of beauty.

Blake, A friend of mine ran Boston for the first time in 30 years this past April. When he finished he told me he was going to look for the race director and ask him who put all those hills in the course since the last time he ran it!

Extreme Cross Training: Paris-Brest-Paris

Garrett, I don't know how these guys can sit in the saddle that long. I get a sore butt and neck after a few hours. This isn't a form of cross training, this is insanity. I know you respect your dad but just because he does something crazy dosn't mean you have to.

"Rolling with the punches" is a great way to approcah those obstacles in life that somehow appear when we least expect them. I feel you're in an excellent frame of mind for the upcoming Olympic Marathon Trials.

A Spectator's Impressions from the National Championships

The guy's from the Bay Area Track Club in section Q to watch his guys in middle- to long-distance track. He wrote a great article. There's nothing stopping you from doing the same. I'm a thrower, I'll love your article, too, even if it's not about the hammer.

A Spectator's Impressions from the National Championships

I have a big problem with writer's like this who never see/pay attention to the field events. it's track AND FIELD! World class results are happening in jumps and throws and writers like this ignore those athletes. They train as hard or harder, their gold, silver or bronze medals are equal in value yet all the media pays attention to is left turns on the track only. 60% of the original Olympic events are throws or jumps... give those athl;etes the attention and credit they deserve!!!

Dinner with Louis Zamperini

Tim, thanks for this wonderful recounting of your and our time with Louie. One of the highlights for me (and there were many) was watching Louie's face and all that he seemed to be feeling (nostalgia, admiration, recognition, longing) as he listened to you at dinner describe your experience when running the 5000 meter race. I will never forget my time with Louie and look forward to having more of them. You and Priscilla made many moments even sweeter by being with us at dinner. I agree with you that meeting Louie (or reading about his life and his thoughts on overcoming all obstacles while remaining humble and grateful which he did in spades) is life changing. He is the essence of being hardy and then some...! Best of luck to you Tim, Karen

No Dope, No Hope

No Dope, No Hope

Well, done. where can I get a cheat to win braclet to wear on my bike rides.? I don't want to tell my cyclying friends "I told you so "directly. The braclet would be more subtle and longer lasting. As for Lance having a sronger heart, better training, etc. I don' necessarily buy that. Maybe he just reacts to EPO better as some athletes react to altitude training better. Thanks for a well thought out article. You made many good points that only some who lives in the game can deduce.

17

No Dope, No Hope

No Dope, No Hope

nice work b. i agree that there absolutely needs to be a more open discussion on doping in athletics and, in my opinion, harsher consequences for those who cheat.

17

No Dope, No Hope

No Dope, No Hope

It all makes sense to me. Perhaps implement a system to avoid a possible career ban for a false positive. something on a severity scale. But with an overwhelming positive or a second offense, I'm all for lifetime ban and repayment of money as far back as it can go. I've got three part time jobs to supporting my clean career. @ Martin B- I know it would be hard to get the money back, but what the hell? If the money's spent then repo their car/ house. Garnish wages. Pull out the gold teeth. A good start would be to sign a mandatory contract for every race with prize money. Something like this: "I understand if I take this money and am found guilty of drug use, I am required by law to give the money to 2nd, 3rd or 4th place finisher." Get enough RD's implementing enough contracts to cut off some cheaters at the door. Then pass a law requiring ALL RD's offering money to include the drug cheat clause. Any additional thoughts?

17

No Dope, No Hope

No Dope, No Hope

It's nice to hear athletes speak out against doping/PEDs. But I feel like you go against yourself in this post. Your 4th proposal is for a "Wall of Shame" yet in in your 1st proposal you state: "I don't want to throw any names out there, but I know too many convicted dirty athletes, coaches, and managers who coach, teach, advise and mentor in our communities." I'm not trying to come down on you - it's clear you are trying to be part of the solution and that is great - but until everyone that wants to clean up their sports is not afraid to speak up, in specifics, against dopers, then it seems almost hypocritical. If you think the aforementioned dirty athletes, coaches, and managers should be shamed, then stick to your guns and shame them.

17

No Dope, No Hope

No Dope, No Hope

The ideas makes sense, but it would be very difficult to implement. As David says, if you are going to give a lifetime ban you have to make sure that the procedures and testing are sound. There needs to be better resources for athletes and better scientific looks at the reliability of the testing (which isn't always done on the new tests). The last thing I'd want to see is a false positive that ended someone's career. Also, paying back earning would be extremely hard to put into practice. As you know personally, most of us athletes have our earnings go straight back into training camps, massage, travel, etc. At the end of the day, what is left in the bank account is little or nothing (at least in the field events). Getting the money back will be impossible.

17

No Dope, No Hope

No Dope, No Hope

Very thoughtful post. But I think the starting point needs to be more basic - they need to actually enforce the sanctions that have already been handed down. To take a local example, Remi Korchemny agreed to quit coaching in order to settle USADA charges arising from his involvement with BALCO and Dwain Chambers. But he still has a coaching website that looks very current and according to a local elite runner's blog, is offering to coach people he meets at tracks. So is anyone going to do anything about this?? [I had originally included weblinks to the relevant sites and articles, but apparently that makes the blog software think the comment is spam.]

17

No Dope, No Hope

No Dope, No Hope

Way to say it Bolota! "If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything."

17

No Dope, No Hope

No Dope, No Hope

Bolota, First off, well done! Very brave to write down your views, I must question one thing: "...doped athletes almost always test positive for the same or other banned substances soon after they are reinstated. It's like putting a convicted drug dealer back out on the streets and expecting him not to sell drugs...." Now I'm certainly don't claim to know everything, but I expect that some newly released drug dealers don't actually march right back to work. I have to believe that for some, rehabilitation works. Off the top of my head I can only think of Ben Johnson and Justin Gatlin as people who tested twice (though I realize there must be more out there). Still, otherwise right on! Jaddy

17

No Dope, No Hope

Nice Job Bolota! I especially agree with proposals 1 & 2.

17

No Dope, No Hope

No Dope, No Hope

Nice blog B!

17

No Dope, No Hope

No Dope, No Hope

I am in total agreement with Bolota here. Do I think that this is necessarily the end-all to doping written here within these paragraphs? ... no, but at least its a bold opinion and a stance being taken for what's right. Just as an opinion I gave a couple years ago was bashed for not being "perfect" and in most cases completely misunderstood, I assume many will comment negatively on Bolota by picking at any slight whole in his proposal. I applaud Bolota for merely breaching this topic in public and making it a discussion. Look, if we had the answers, we'd implement them, but until we do, the more we discuss it and push for a change, the closer we'll come to actually achieving what many think can't be. Thanks for this Bolota! Much Respect.

17

No Dope, No Hope

No Dope, No Hope

I like this a lot Belota. I think you have the right ideas. Torrence is on the right track as well. I only slightly disagree with you on #1. A first time offender should receive a more serious suspension, but his/her B test should be looked at, and brash decisions should definitely not be made.

17

No Dope, No Hope

No Dope, No Hope

AMEN Bolota!-- i would only add a public roast

17

No Dope, No Hope

No Dope, No Hope

Perhaps you can elaborate on why you think his view is invalid? This is a discussion that needs to be out in the open, and instead of calling people names behind an anonymous shield, why don't you at least put your own opinions forward, and argue why you disagree with him? I personally agree with all of his points. Especially in the Bay Area, I've seen too many convicted cheaters around, mentoring/coaching/living off their earning that they won. IF we are to eliminate this drug culture in sports, the punishment should match the damage that is done. However, in regards to #1, if we are to implement life-time bans for first time offenses, WADA and USADA need to become much clearer in their procedures, implement an "approved supplements" list, and (at least for USADA) redo their website. It is still difficult to navigate, and can really use some work.

17

No Dope, No Hope

No Dope, No Hope

@ Common sense: Nice to know you're adding constructively. Perhaps you'd like to share your ideas of how to address the situation? Probably not, because you either have none or are too scared to.

Burning off excess fat, however, is not the same as adding lean muscle mass. if you can get rid of extra fat via meds, you'd still need to exercise to have efficient, strong muscles and a fit and healthy cardiovascular system. So even if people don't exercise, at least they would be less likely to sucb to disease that results from excess fat. And that would be a net benefit to society.

Blake, It was incredibly inspiring to toe the lien behind you real elite runners on Monday. I was rooting for you to do something special at Boston (as well as myself), but unfortunately Monday just wasn't our day. I know you will bounce back from this and you will be amazing next January!
